Western Digital has put together a very nice network attached storage (NAS) device with the My Cloud. It was very easy to set up for both local and remote access.

A few things to know up front:

1. This device cannot be plugged into a computer for use.
2. It needs a hard wired ethernet connection - it cannot connect to your network wirelessly.

The My Cloud probably has one of the best web-based configuration interfaces I've seen. In fact it's possible on most home routers to find the device just by pointing a browser at wdmycloud.local - you don't even need to dig around in your router settings to find its IP address. Once in it's very easy to configure folders and users.

Also of note is that the Macs, Windows PCs, and even smart TVs in the house could immediately find and access the drive through their native interfaces. If you don't plan on using the drive remotely there is absolutely no software installation necessary. I do not recommend installing the configuration software Western Digital will suggest you use as it will stay resident on your computer and just links to the web based control panel anyhow.

The drive offers the ability to restrict access by user, including hiding folders from those who do not have access and assigning read only access to certain users.

The drive successfully streamed content I originally recorded on my iPhone to a Samsung television. The TV is DLNA compatible and was able to find the My Cloud drive on the network automatically. It popped up in my source list when I pressed the remote control button - a nice surprise. The drive is able to serve media files fast enough to play back Blu Ray quality movies on compatible devices.

Remote access works well. When using the drive when away from the local network special software will need to be installed on a Mac or PC to access files. Opening files through the software will copy the file to the local computer for editing. Once saved the file will then sync back to the My Cloud drive.

This drive has the same beautiful, soft rubber covered chassis as their other MAC versions that come with their non-thunderbolt bases. It really is fantastic aesthetically; seems like that doesn't matter much, but worth noting.

To make it clear, you need to buy a different Seagate base if you want it to run on USB - this particular version ONLY has Thunderbolt ports.

Interesting that one reviewer noted that one can use their docks to dock other hard drives - at least internal drives. I hadn't noticed before, but instead was always somewhat annoyed that although they use standard SATA ports, the female ports on the actual Seagate drives are actually recessed and off to the side so that you cannot use the drive with a third-party dock, and therefore have to buy their bases, making the whole set up what I term "semi-proprietary".

The bottom part of the actual dock is thinner than their other docks, with the part off to the side (to house the extra circuitry?) That is kind of a shame, but may get smaller with time.

In this case, I was actually impressed with Seagate's online support (I usually don't need help with such matters): when I formatted this to NTFS, I quickly realized that Windows 64bit and even Paragon 2010 (out of date) have all kinds of issues with drives over 2.2TB, and surprisingly, Seagate's website had all the information listed concisely, and offered a free tool to format the drive and it now reads easily on all my Win7 computers. I was in a rush at that moment, so I'm grateful I didn't have to do further research.

Like others have said, I am still a bit skeptical of diving into brand new technologies very early, so I'll let that be your judgment call. I usually give standard drives a four, but I guess I'll go with a five this time because I thought Seagate's support was quite adequate when I actually needed it.

Setting this puppy up was, of course, easy. The Thunderbolt adapter makes this drive absolutely fly, I've been using USB 2.0 drives for so long that I was unprepared for the raw speed that I could expect from this drive. 3TB is pretty high up there in capacity too, but of course, the bigger the drives, the more there is to lose (assuming you fill them like I do), so as always, keep backups...and backups of backups.

Aesthetically this thing looks great on my desk, even with the adapter coming out over the side. The surface texture of the drive is indescribable, but it feels really cool and soft, almost like skin, without having any give to it. I actually had my coworkers touch it and they were all impressed (a group made up mostly of engineers who are rarely impressed by anything). Odd, yeah, but if it's going to take up residence on my desk, it needs to provide a little something extra. The single sliver strip up the face gives it a bit of style without being gaudy, or without being so featureless that it provides no visual interest to the space it occupies (take note, Western Digital, you need to step up the game on your boring lumps of black glass plastic).

I bought Best price Elgato Thunderbolt portable external solid state drive so I could have fast access to my photo library when traveling with my MacBook Air.

I primarily use Lightroom and Capture One for photo editing; both of which are very demanding in terms of disk access. Keeping the library and images on the Elgato SSD has been a huge boost to overall performance. It makes editing photos on the road fast and enjoyable; night and day difference compared to trying to do it with a USB drive.

For those who like numbers - I'm seeing about 230MB/sec for copies to or from the Elgato SSD. It's rather shocking how fast even large files can be moved around with this little gem.

The all-metal case seems very rugged, and it looks nice too.

Highly recommend.

I purchased this disk array, stripped out the disks and replaced them with 2xSSD's. The performance has been beyond all my expectations. My use of this array is for demonstrating very large and complex computer systems that normally require a server class machine. I have been able to put the software and database for several applications onto this disk, run the applications from my MacBook Pro and get faster results than our data center servers. I will be purchasing another one of these and daisy chain them together. The small footprint of this unit has made it a perfect fit for my needs as i am constantly traveling all over the world and it fits snugly into my briefcase.

The aluminum frame and plastic top look great and feel great in my hands. Very solid with no flex. The two pieces are glued together using some kind of sticky tape (very similar to the glue on the Apple Time Capsule) and it was very difficult to open the case. I do not recommend that you try it!

Once the top and bottom frames are separated, the entire PCB-HD-shieldcage assembly is held together with 6 high-quality screws. These were really well machined screws, with nicely polished beveled edges! (Every little thing counts.)

The circuit board appears to be very well made, with plenty of SMDs, metal shielding and grounding. Both the USB and Thunderbolt ports are grounded with the drive through a metal cage. I think the circuit board "fit and finish" quality almost matches the logic board on my macbook pro.

The hard drive is a SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB. The sticker on the drive has both Seagate and Samsung printed on it. My drive had a manufacture date of May 2012. This is the normal 9.5mm laptop drive, which sells for $100. Buffalo did not cheap out and use the thicker drives!

The case worked with other 2.5" 9.5mm height hard drives, so I may be replacing the drive with a SSD in the future. I have not tested alternate drives yet.

GREAT VALUE at $230:
1. The 1TB drive is worth $100.
2. The enclosure/case and circuitry is easily worth $50 in my opinion. It would be hard to find a similar quality USB 3.0 only case at this price. (Despite the glue!)
3. The included cables (Thunderbolt + USB 3) are worth at least $50. (But, the cables are short.)

I paid $229.00, which was the original launch price, and it was a great value. However, at $270 the Seagate Drive with easy-exchange interface looks better to me...

ORIGIN:
The external sticker says Made in Japan. However the hard drive is Made in China.

USAGE:
This drive works great on my Macbook Air 2011 and Macbook Pro 13" 2011. However, the drive was not recognized in my Macbook Pro until I applied the Apple's thunderbolt firmware software update.

The brochure for the drive make it sound like this drive will run at pure thunderbolt speeds. However that is misleading. A 5400RPM drive simply cannot saturate the thunderbolt interface. The drive reads and writes around 100MB/s over thunderbolt on my 2011 Macbook Pro 13". That is still very fast compared to USB 2.0 and slightly faster than FW800; but it is definitely not "twice as fast as USB 3.0". The drive reaches around 30 MB/s in USB 2.0 mode.
